Diary of a surgeon : U.S. Army, 1864-1899.

Holograph diary (1864 Nov.-1866 Aug.) and a clipping (1899) of Henry Orlando Marcy. Diary also includes photographs of Marcy and of maps (drawn by Marcy). Diary commences as Marcy leaves Jacksonville, Florida, and sails to Boyds Neck, Jasper County, South Carolina. Marcy records his military movements between towns and army camps in Beaufort, Jasper, and Charleston Counties of South Carolina. Marcy mentions Beaufort, Charleston, Hilton Head, James Island (fortifications), Rockville, Summerville, Lowndes [Grove] Plantation, and Middleton Plantation (before and after Union troops burned the plantation house). Topics include wounded soldiers, the movement of troops, and battles. Two sketch maps of the Port Royal area and a sketch of the torpedo boats being built at the navy yard on the Stono River are included. Also includes an 1899 clipping about the Battle of Honey Hill, Jasper County, South Carolina in 1864.

Marcy, Henry O. (Henry Orlando), 1837-1924

Son of Smith and Fanny Bibbs Marcy, native of Massachusetts, and graduate of Harvard Medical School. Henry Orlando Marcy served as a surgeon with the United States Army during the Civil War. He was appointed medical director of Florida, and later served as director on Gen. William T. Sherman's staff in the Carolina campaign. After the war Marcy served as president of the American Academy of Medicine and of the American Medical Association. From the description of Diary of a surgeon :...
